That’s exactly what happened with this

that came into our shop here in Bend. The customer noticed

That decision? It likely saved them from a much bigger problem.

This kind of history matters because it gives us context. We’re not guessing about the car—we understand how it’s been driven, maintained, and repaired over time.

The Initial Concern: “There Was Liquid Under My Car”

The customer knew that if she stopped by, we’d take the time to perform a complimentary 15-minute no-wrench inspection right away. As soon as the vehicle arrived, our technician pulled it into the shop and quickly noticed something concerning.

            Coolant reservoir was completely empty

            Active coolant leak present

Leak appeared to be coming from underneath the intake manifold

At this point, we knew this wasn’t something minor.

            The next step was clear:

           pressure test the cooling system

to pinpoint the exact source of the leak.

Step 1: Pressure Testing Reveals a Hidden Leak

After pressurizing the cooling system, we confirmed:

An active coolant leak underneath the intake manifold

Extremely limited visibility in that area

So we brought in one of our favorite tools for situations like this:

           A borescope camera.

Using the scope, we were able to get eyes into a space that’s normally impossible to see and what we saw initially raised a major red flag.

The “Uh Oh” Moment: Possible Engine Block Failure

Based on the initial visual inspection, it appeared that:

The leak may be coming from a cooling passage in the engine block

The casting could potentially be compromised

In simple terms… This could have been a

very expensive, very serious engine issue,

           b

ut here’s where experience matters. Instead of jumping to conclusions, we made the call to go deeper. Because guessing is expensive.

           Confirming is everything.

Step 2: Removing the Intake Manifold for Certainty

To get a clear view, we removed the intake manifold and repeated the pressure test.

           And that’s when everything changed.

The Real Cause: Oil Filter Housing Failure

With full visibility, we were able to clearly identify the actual source of the leak:

            Failed oil filter housing seal

            Active external coolant leak

Potential risk of coolant mixing within the housing assembly

Not an engine block failure. A

           repairable issue

           !

           STEP 3: The Repair Plan

To properly fix the issue and protect the engine long-term, we recommended:

            Replace oil filter housing assembly

This case is the perfect example of why:

Understanding the Heart of Your Vehicle: The Engine

Your engine is the true powerhouse of your vehicle; the “heart” that keeps everything running smoothly. Whether you’re navigating Bend’s scenic Cascade backroads or commuting downtown, your car relies on a healthy engine to get you there safely. At Peak Euro, Bend’s trusted European auto repair shop, we believe knowledge is power. By understanding how your engine works, you can catch small issues early, prevent costly repairs, and extend the life of your vehicle.

Common Engine Problems and Warning Signs

Engine trouble often starts with small symptoms. Recognizing these signs early can save you stress, time, and money. Here are a few issues every driver should know:

            Check Engine Light

The dreaded check engine light can mean anything from a loose gas cap to a serious mechanical failure. Don’t ignore it! Our certified technicians at Peak Euro in Bend, OR can diagnose the problem quickly and accurately.

            Unusual Noises

Knocking, tapping, or grinding sounds may indicate worn bearings, low oil, or internal engine wear. If your car doesn’t sound like it used to, it’s time for an inspection.

            Rough Idling or Stalling

A shaky idle or sudden stalls often point to fuel delivery problems or malfunctioning sensors. Addressing these issues early keeps you from getting stranded.

Preventative Engine Maintenance: Your Best Investment

At Peak Euro, we emphasize preventative care because a well-maintained engine lasts longer and performs better. Our top recommendations include:

            Regular Oil Changes

Clean oil is vital to engine health. It keeps components lubricated and prevents internal damage. We use the manufacturer-recommended oil and service intervals for your specific vehicle.

            Cooling System Checks

Your cooling system keeps your engine at the right temperature. Our coolant flushes and inspections ensure your vehicle won’t overheat, even on long summer drives through Central Oregon.

            Comprehensive Engine Inspections

From belts and gaskets to hoses and sensors, we thoroughly inspect your engine for early warning signs. Spotting issues before they escalate can save thousands in repairs.

           Diagnosis by Peak Euro

When the sun’s out in Central Oregon, a working air conditioner isn’t a luxury, it’s a must. Recently, we had a 2008 Land Rover LR2 HSE roll into the shop with an AC that just couldn’t keep up. The owner explained that no matter how high they cranked the dial, the air never got cold.

This job landed in the capable hands of Joseph, our newest team member and Jaguar Land Rover specialist. He’s seen his fair share of tricky AC issues, so he dove right in.

First, Joseph verified the concern for himself, and sure enough, the AC was pushing out nothing but ambient air, hovering at 73°F. A quick fault scan showed no stored trouble codes related to the climate system, so the next logical step was to check the refrigerant level.

Hooking up the recovery machine revealed only 0.47 KGS of refrigerant, significantly under the LR2’s factory specification of 0.73 KGS. For an AC system to function properly, the refrigerant charge needs to be spot-on; too little, and the system can’t build enough pressure to activate the compressor clutch.

Next, Joseph performed a leak inspection. He found telltale signs of refrigerant oil around the Schrader valves (valve stems) and the suction line’s O-ring at the compressor. Clear evidence of slow leaks that can drain refrigerant over time.

Testing the extent of the damage:

With the leaks identified, Joseph replaced the failing Schrader valves and the suction line O-ring using higher-quality, OEM-equivalent parts. Once the leaks were sealed up, Joseph evacuated and recharged the system back to the proper 0.73 KGS. A recheck confirmed no immediate leaks and that system pressures were right where they should be. But the job wasn’t finished yet, the AC still refused to blow cold.

           Continued Repair:

Time for more detective work. Joseph observed that when the AC switch was engaged, the compressor clutch didn’t click in to pressurize the refrigerant circuit. He measured the voltage at the clutch’s trigger wire: 13.34 volts, a healthy signal indicating that the vehicle’s electronics were doing their job.

To confirm, he bypassed the circuit using a specialized diagnostic tool to jump power directly to the clutch. Still no engagement, which confirmed the internal clutch mechanism had failed.

On this particular model, it’s not cost-effective or reliable to just replace the clutch alone. Replacing the entire compressor assembly is the best practice which ensures all moving parts are fresh and allows us to stand behind the repair with our 3-year/36,000-mile parts and labor warranty.

Once the new, higher-quality compressor was installed and the system recharged, Joseph ran a final test. Success! The AC quickly dropped cabin temperatures from ambient 73°F to a frosty 41.1°F, exactly what you want on a hot day.

           The Takeaway

This Land Rover’s visit is a great reminder that the right diagnosis, proper parts, and quality workmanship save drivers from headaches and repeat failures down the road. Small leaks at valves and O-rings can gradually rob your AC of refrigerant, leading to bigger issues like an overworked or failed compressor clutch.

WHY REPLACING BRAKE PADS AND ROTORS TOGETHER MATTERS

When it comes to your vehicle, safety should always come first. At Peak Euro in Bend, OR, we know that a properly maintained braking system is crucial to your driving safety and vehicle performance. As your trusted local auto repair specialists, we proudly offer comprehensive brake repair in Bend, OR, to ensure optimal safety for you and your loved ones on every journey.

Your brake pads and rotors work together to bring your vehicle to a stop. Brake pads apply friction to the rotors, which slows the wheels. Over time, both components wear down, impacting overall braking performance. If only the pads are replaced while rotors are worn, you risk uneven braking, noisy stops, and faster pad deterioration. At Peak Euro, we recommend replacing both at the same time to ensure smooth, safe, and consistent braking performance.

The Risks of Neglecting Brake Maintenance

Neglecting brake service can lead to serious consequences, not just for your vehicle, but for your personal safety. Worn brakes mean longer stopping distances and a greater risk of brake failure. As one of the leading shops for brake repair in Bend, our Technicians, whether they’re factory trained Master Technicians, or ASE certified, we can catch small issues before they become costly hazards.

How Often Should You Check Your Brakes?

We recommend getting a professional brake inspection every 6,000 to 10,000 miles. However, depending on your driving habits and conditions, you might need them checked sooner. At Peak Euro, we inspect your brake pads at every visit to help prevent issues before they arise.

           Signs You Need Brake Repair

Along with regular inspections, it’s important to be alert for these signs that indicate you may need brake service:

            Strange Noises:

Squealing, grinding, or clicking sounds when applying brakes underscore a need for inspection.

            Vibrations:

If your steering wheel or brake pedal vibrates when braking, this could be a sign of warped rotors.

            Reduced Responsiveness:

A spongy brake pedal that requires more pressure to stop is a significant warning sign.

A Cautionary Tale of Delayed Repairs and Engine Damage 2015 Audi A3

We recently had a 2015 Audi A3 come into the shop that highlights just how important timely and thorough repair work can be, especially when it involves your engine’s cooling system.

           THE BACK STORY

About two years ago, the customer noticed a coolant leak and took the vehicle to another shop. That shop eventually determined the repair needed was outside of their capabilities and referred the customer elsewhere. Unfortunately, the diagnosis process stretched on for nearly a year, and the vehicle sat at the original shop for another 10 months after that. Most recently, the diagnosis pointed to bent valves in the cylinder head.

           DIAGNOSIS BY PEAK EURO

When the customer brought the Audi to us, Deven, one of our skilled technicians, jumped in to assess the situation. Here's what he uncovered:

            Cooling system leak confirmed:

Using a pressure test, Deven pinpointed the leak at the upper radiator hose T.

            Further investigation:

He removed the spark plugs and found cylinders 1 and 4 to be unusually clean, a potential sign of coolant entering the combustion chamber.

            Initial recommendation:

Replace the faulty radiator hose and re-pressure test the cooling system to determine if the head gasket is leaking.

           WHAT DEVEN FOUND NEXT

After replacing the radiator hose and re-testing the system, Deven confirmed the worst: the head gasket was leaking. Using a borescope, he visually confirmed coolant entering the combustion chamber, an issue with serious implications. But that wasn't all.

Deven also found deep scoring on the cylinder walls. This kind of damage is often the result of unburned fuel washing away the thin layer of oil that lubricates the cylinder walls, a condition known as “cylinder wash.” In this case, the head gasket leak caused a misfire. Misfiring leads to incomplete combustion, which allows raw fuel to remain in the cylinder. That unburned fuel then strips away oil from the cylinder walls, leaving the piston rings without proper lubrication. Over time, this results in scoring or even a washboard-like texture on the cylinder walls, damage that significantly compromises engine performance and longevity.

This is one of the key reasons it’s critical to address misfires immediately. Most vehicles are equipped with a check engine light that flashes during a misfire event. That flashing light is your car’s way of telling you the misfire is actively harming the engine and/or emissions components, and continued driving in this condition can cause irreversible damage, just like in this case.

           THE PATH FORWARD: TWO OPTIONS

Given the extent of the damage and the mileage on the vehicle, here are the two options we presented to the customer:

           Option 1:

           Repair the Existing Engine

Remove the cylinder head and send it to a machine shop to check for cracks.

Inspect the engine block for warping once the head is off.

Note: Deep scoring on the cylinder walls may still lead to oil consumption issues, even after repair.

Due to mileage, timing chains would also be due for replacement.

           Option 2:

            Replace the Engine

Install a used engine with similar mileage.

Ideally, source an engine that already has new timing chains and a functioning cylinder head.

This option could offer a more reliable and cost-effective long-term solution.

           THE FINAL DECISION

After reviewing both options, the customer chose to move forward with replacing the engine. With a used engine that includes new timing chains and a healthy cylinder head, they now have a more dependable setup and peace of mind for the road ahead.

To summarize, the leaking head gasket was responsible for the misfire, which then allowed unburned fuel to strip oil from the cylinder walls. Without proper lubrication for the piston rings, this leads to scoring or washboarding of the cylinder walls. This is why it's crucial to address misfires promptly. When a vehicle’s check engine light flashes during a misfire, it serves as a warning that the engine or emissions components are being damaged due to the issue the engine control module (ECM) is detecting.

           THE ENGINE REPLACEMENT PROCESS

           Step 1:

           Getting Prepped & Tearing Down

Before anything comes out, the vehicle is secured and the battery is safely disconnected. From there:

All essential fluids; engine oil, coolant, and transmission fluid, are drained.

We remove the front bumper, grille, and radiator assembly to clear the way for engine removal.

           Step 2:

            Engine Extraction

With access cleared, we begin detaching the heart of the car:

Electrical connections and the engine wiring harness are disconnected and carefully labeled for an error-free reinstall.

Major components like the intake manifold, exhaust system, and turbochargers are removed.

Once free, the engine is hoisted out of the bay with care.

           Step 3:

            Parts Transfer & Prep Work

Not every component needs to be replaced; some just need a little TLC:

Reusable parts such as the alternator, starter, and A/C compressor are cleaned and inspected.

Sensors, brackets, and pulleys are transferred from the old engine to the replacement unit.

A fresh timing chain kit is installed, and all worn gaskets and seals are replaced to ensure long-term reliability

           Step 4:

            Dropping In the Replacement Engine

Now comes the exciting part, installation:

The replacement engine is positioned in the bay and secured with brand-new engine mounts.

All systems electrical, intake/exhaust, and fluid lines, are reconnected with precision.

Fresh fluids and filters are added, and the system is thoroughly bled to eliminate air pockets.

           Step 5:

            Testing, Tuning & Final Checks

Before handing back the keys, we make sure everything is dialed in:

A full diagnostic scan is performed, and any stored fault codes are cleared.

The engine is started and monitored closely for leaks, odd noises, or irregular behavior.

Finally, we take it out on the road to ensure it performs smoothly in real-world conditions.

This case with the 2015 Audi A3 is a perfect reminder of the critical importance of timely repairs, especially when it comes to something as essential as the engine's cooling system. What started as a small coolant leak turned into a much more significant issue, ultimately requiring an engine replacement to ensure the vehicle's long-term reliability and performance. By catching the problem early and taking swift action, we were able to provide the customer with a cost-effective, dependable solution.

The customer reported that their transmission wasn’t shifting from park, and a previous scan revealed the transmission shift motor wasn’t receiving the correct signals from the shift lever. The signal voltage measured 2.2V when it should have been

Carl meticulously disassembled the dashboard trim panels to access the wiring and components, carefully tracing the signal path. His investigation uncovered a critical problem:

The solution required several key repairs:

Replace the EZS Control Unit with a new module

Replace 40 corroded EZS control module wires

Install a new firewall plug to prevent future water leaks

With the damaged components swapped out, it was time to program the new module and that’s when the real challenge began.

           The Programming Process

Programming the new EZS was an extensive process. Carl meticulously verified power and ground connections, confirming they were in perfect condition. During programming, he observed that the ignition (15 power) relay intermittently shut off, interrupting the process. This prompted a thorough diagnostic approach, including:

Inspecting the passenger-side fuse box for corrosion where none was found.

Reseating all connections and fuses supplying power to the VGS and EZS.

After reseating the connections, communication stabilized just enough to initiate programming. Even then, coding the EZS and integrating it with the vehicle presented multiple challenges. Carl carefully refined each step of the process until programming was successfully completed.

           Restoring the Vehicle to Life

With the EZS programmed, another hurdle emerged: the VIN was lost in several modules, requiring manual reprogramming. Carl re-entered the VIN, carefully resynchronized all 4 keys to the new EZS, and performed extensive test drives to ensure the vehicle operated flawlessly.

The result? The transmission shifted, all modules communicated perfectly, and no faults returned. The Mercedes-Benz was back on the road, running like new.

How Much Fun Is it To Drive On The Autobahn?

At Peak Euro in Bend, OR, we've always dreamed of driving on Germany's Autobahn highway. But how much fun is it really?

One of our dreams here at Peak Euro is to drive The Autobahn someday. This famous German highway not only pushes speed limits to the limit but also its drivers’ skills. One reason why European automobiles are known for their ease of handling is that people need enhanced control of their vehicles when they’re driving on these high-speed European highways. Believe it or not, The Autobahn has driving rules. Here are some of the rules to put in your back pocket if you get a chance to drive this highway.

           Pass on the Left

You cannot pass on the right on The Autobahn. The only legal way to pass a slower vehicle is to do so on the left. It’s also a rule that you must signal your intentions; no just passing without turning on your left signal first. Signaling equals courtesy and courtesy is required on The Autobahn.

           Always Check Your Mirrors

With you and everyone else going super-fast, it’s crucial that you always check your mirrors, especially your left side-view mirror when you’re planning to change lanes. People are coming up fast on the left-hand side, and you should always be aware of where all the traffic is.

Newbies and Slow Drivers Keep Right

Until you get used to driving on this fast highway, it’s a good idea to stay to the right. This is where the slower traffic also drives. It might be tempting to hit the left-hand lanes and push the speedometer to the limit, but unless you’re experienced driving at the higher speeds, it can be dangerous.

           Watch for Speed Limits

Contrary to popular belief, The Autobahn does enact speed limits through major towns and when the weather, road construction, or traffic conditions require it. You will see digital signs on The Autobahn that will reflect speed restrictions when they are in effect. Obey them.

           Take Breaks to Keep Fresh

Driving at fast speeds takes more out of you than you might realize. If you plan on spending the day on this superhighway, plan breaks every two hours to get out of your car and visit quaint German villages. This keeps you refreshed and alert behind the wheel.

           Don’t Rage

German drivers are used to The Autobahn, and they will drive aggressively all around you. They may pass you in frustration and cut in front of you, and when they do, it’s important not to succumb to road rage. This is how they drive. It’s nothing personal.

Signs My Mercedes’ Mass Airflow Sensor Is Going Bad

Peak Euro in Bend, OR, shares some of the signs that your mass airflow sensor (MAF) is going bad. If they are familiar, make an appointment.

One of the first signs that your Mercedes’ mass airflow (MAF) sensor is going bad is the check engine light. This light will come on because the MAF sensor sent an error code to the main computer, i.e., the engine control module (ECM). This is just one sign that the mass airflow sensor is on the fritz. Peak Euro lists the other signs of a bad mass airflow sensor below.

           Acceleration Trouble

The MAF sensor tracks the airflow into the engine. It reports this information to the ECM. This is so the ECM can adjust the air and fuel in the combustion chamber. If the MAF sensor is incorrect in its readings, you may end up with too much air in the mix and your acceleration will lag.

If there is too much fuel in the mix, your Mercedes’ engine will burn away the excess diesel fuel or gasoline. When this happens, you end up with more exhaust flowing out of the tailpipe than normal. A rich fuel mixture can also be caused by a bad mass airflow sensor.

           Engine Hesitation

Going back to too much air, your engine will hesitate even after the acceleration hesitated. You may find it difficult to pick up speed, and you may find it difficult to maintain your speed. Your engine may sputter and struggle to run at the speed you desire.

           Engine Surging

Too much fuel causes the opposite effect. When the engine is burning away excess fuel, your Mercedes-Benz will turn into a bucking bronco. It will surge and buck forward even though you are not changing the pressure of your foot on the accelerator.

           Hard Starts

A malfunctioning MAF sensor also makes it difficult to get your Mercedes-Benz started. This, again, is because the mixture in the combustion chamber is out of balance. It’s possible that the failing MAF sensor is indirectly causing a reduction of fuel injection.

           Idling Problems

You may also notice that your Mercedes-Benz idles more roughly than it normally does. When the engine has a low amount of fuel in it, it will struggle to run. In fact, you may notice the rough idling more than you notice problems when the vehicle is in motion.

           Reduced Fuel Economy

Finally, if you keep track of it, you will notice that your fuel economy is reduced by the malfunctioning mass airflow sensor. All of the issues in the combustion chamber discussed above reduce your vehicle’s efficiency and, as such, its fuel economy.

Signs That Your European Automobile’s Oil Filter Is Clogged

We here at Peak Euro cannot stress enough how important it is that you get your European automobile’s oil changed at the recommended mileage milestone.

We here at Peak Euro cannot stress enough how important it is that you get your European automobile’s oil changed at the recommended mileage milestone. Not only does your engine need fresh motor oil but it also needs a clean oil filter. Driving with a clogged oil filter can cause the following problems. What’s worse is that it can damage the engine.

           Reduced Engine Performance

Your engine performance will be reduced by the clogged filter because it is causing dirty motor oil to be circulated through the engine. As the oil circulates through the engine, it deposits dirt and grime on the moving parts. This directly affects their ability to function. Consequently, your European automobile’s engine performance will lag until you get an oil change and replace the oil filter.

           Reduced Fuel Economy

As you likely already know, any time your engine is struggling to perform you will see a reduction in your European automobile’s fuel economy. This is a side effect of a poor-performing engine. Unfortunately, you will head to the service station more often until you get the oil changed in the oil filter replaced. The reason why is that your engine will continue to perform poorly until this time.

           Reduced Oil Pressure

Another reason why the engine is performing poorly is that the oil pressure has been reduced by the clogged oil filter. Aside from a poor-performing engine, you will also see an oil light illuminated on your dashboard. This is your European automobile’s main computer chip, the engine control module, telling you that there is an oil problem in the engine. In this case, it’s reduced oil pressure.

           Metallic Noises in the Engine

The more the oil filter gets clogged the more it inhibits oil circulation. Eventually, you will end up with little to no oil circulating through the engine. When this happens, you will hear metallic noises coming from the engine because the parts are moving against each other without lubrication. If you continue to drive your European automobile in this condition, you can literally kill the engine in less than 30 minutes.

           Exhaust Filled With Hydrocarbons

Finally, your European automobile’s exhaust will get filled with hydrocarbons from the dirty motor oil. This means there is no chance for the vehicle to pass an emissions test.
